According to USA Today, Barber said: As a woman in the United States Army, I think it is an amazing job by our government to allow women to integrate into every branch of the military.
We are just as tough as men. As a commander of my unit I am powerful, I am dedicated and
it’s important to recognize that gender does not limit us in the United States Army.”
She spoke further on being confident and beautiful.
To me confidently beautiful means understanding its not always about your appearance. It’s not always about who you are around and how they feel you look, where they feel you come from or your economic background. Serving in the military has taught me that being confidently beautiful is about being able to earn respect from people regardless of what you look like. As a woman in the military, people associate beauty with weakness and they learn very quickly that I’m extremely strong, and though I’m small, I’m powerful. Confidently beautiful is being myself and being very happy with who I’ve become.”
The lieutenant and beauty queen won the prestigious contest on Sunday, June 6, 2016 at the T-Mobile Arena will also compete in the 2016 Miss Universe contest.
She set history as the first ever military officer to win the Miss USA crown. Barber got the crown from the 2015 winner, Miss Oklahoma, Olivia Jordan.
According to ABC News, the beauty queen who spoke at a press conference shortly after her win stated that she intends taking a break from the army as she had, in the past, already discussed possibilities of this with her superiors in the event she wins.
At present, she serves twice every month.
ABC News further reports that she intends to use her current spotlight to project several causes.
They wrote: “Barber said she plans to use the pageant’s spotlight and her title to support veteran’s causes and tackle the issue of suicide and post-traumatic stress disorder among military members.”
