Wow! Noun shuts down five illegal study centres in Lagos

The National Open University of Nigeria,(NOUN) on Friday shut down five illegal study centres operating in different parts of Lagos State.

The Director, Media and Information of the institution, Malam Ibrahim Sheme, said the decision was taken following reports from some concerned Nigerians.

The management had to set up a committee to monitor the activities of its study centres nationwide, in the interest of the general public.

He said, “We will continue to clamp down on the activities of such centres, whose main aim is to defraud Nigerians of their hard-earned incomes, given the economic situation in the country today.

“We just visited Lagos to monitor our centres and their operations and discovered five illegal study centres operating there.

“Anyone who wants to run a study centre must go through due process by officially registering with the institution, subject to meeting all the laid-down criteria.

“It is not by doing it illegally or by way of fraud. Those who discuss with NOUN for such purpose are given permission to do that, after meeting the prescribed requirements.”

Sheme said that all those found guilty would be made to face the law.

He also criticized the collaboration of owners of some major schools by allowing operators of such centres to use the centres in their institutions.

Sheme stressed that such school owners found alongside the operators of the illegal study centres would also be prosecuted, stating that ignorance of the law was not an excuse.

Jamb withdraws 2016 admission list from varsities

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) yesterday said it has withdrawn the list of recommended

candidates for admission earlier sent to the tertiary institutions.
In a statement issued in Abuja and signed by Head of Media, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, he said the withdrawal is to ensure the university senate perform its statutory responsibility.

The statement reads ;
"This is to ensure that the University Senate perform its statutory responsibility of conducting the selection of candidates and refer it to JAMB for confirmation in line with the admission criteria of merit, catchment and educationally disadvantaged states as directed by the Hon Minister of Education at the policy committee meeting.

"The earlier list was sent to help fast track the process of admission so as to allow other tiers of institutions also conduct their admission.
"Candidates should not panic because this is part of the process of the 2016 admission exercise. JAMB regrets any inconvenience this decision would have caused the tertiary institutions

"The Board regrets any inconvenience it's proactive step would have caused the tertiary institutions".

Late Odusami Ajibola Matthew a 500-level Estate Management student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) reportedly died after a game of football.

The late Odusami had reportedly excused himself to get some rest after he had started breathing heavily during the game, he had slumped and passed out while walking towards a seat.

According to one of his classmates Folorunsho Adedolapo, he was confirmed dead at the hospital. Here’s what he said:

We are dedicating this thread towards enlightening candidates seeking admission into higher institutions on what the recently proposed JAMB Admission screening model for admissions actually means.

For the sake of emphasis and clarity, the raw facts will be omitted. What you have here is the interpretation of the raw facts to allay the confusion of many candidates. 

If the proposed model for admission as proposed by JAMB is to be adopted for 2016/2017 admission process, below is how the admission process will run and all you should know about it.

1. JAMB must offer a candidate an admission before such candidates qualifies for screening in the institution he or she has been provisionally admitted. This means that institutions can only screening candidates sent to them by JAMB as having been provisionally admitted in such institution.

2. Institutions admission screening processes will now be based on point system. The first on the point system is the O'level grading. Candidates who have only one O-level result will stand a better chance of gaining admission than candidates with 2 results. One 0'level result = 10 marks/points while two O'level results = 3 marks/points. 

Similarly, each grade will now have its equivalent points/marks in this manner; A=6 marks, B=4 marks, C=3 marks which means the having better grades

NANS seeks passage of Communication Service Tax bill, says it will alleviate sufferings of unemployed youths

The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has thrown its weight behind the two chambers of National Assembly for quick passage of Communication Service Tax (CST) bill currently before the legislature.The association also expressed its unalloyed support for the passage of the proposed Unemployed Youth, Elderly and Indigent Sustainability Allowances Trust Fund bill also pending before the federal lawmakers.

In a communiqué issued at a press conference on Wednesday, the National President of the union, Comrade Tijani Shehu said that the union decided to declare its total support for the ongoing debate on the two bills, because of its belief in their provisions to alleviate the sufferings and agony of the youths and the elderly people in the society.

BUK female student commits suicide over failed course registration

A female student in the Department of Library Science, Faculty of Education, Bayero University Kano (BUK), has ended her life by taking an insecticide.

She left a suicide note saying that she has failed to meet a dateline for the registration of an elective course.

 In the note she said, “I will not apply for course suspension my academics is all I live for, if I can’t get it right, f**k existing.”

The student, Sarah Imoleaya Ighidabo, from Edo State, failed an elective course unit in the faculty of sciences after missing examinations and was made to repeat the course. Ms Ighidalo had passed all her major courses in Library Science.

But by missing registration of her elective course, meant that she was not enrolled for the course during the semester and had to retake the course next year.

However, on Thursday May 12, 2016, the deceased went to the faculty’s office to see if anything could be done about her case, but she found out that it was too late to make any amends.

Consequently, she became restless, left the office and descended the stairs to where she had kept her bag. There, she was said to have written a suicide note and brought out a container of Sniper insecticide used mostly in driving away soil borne pests and drank it. Fuel price: ​Strike is the only way to express our grievance – Labour leader

Sunday Adeleye, the Chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council, Ondo State chapter, has said the ongoing protest against petrol price hike was the only way workers could express their grievances.

Adeleye, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria in Akure on Wednesday, said workers would go back to work as soon as the government honoured their demands.

Also speaking, Solomon Igbelowowa, the Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Teachers in the state, said he did not expect that any faction of the labour movement would refuse to join the strike.

Igbelowowa said workers, especially teachers, would ensure that their demands are met by the government before returning to work.

NAN reports that protesters blocked the popular Oba-Adesida Road carrying placards, even as some public institutions, including banks, were under lock and key as at the time of this report.

Some of the placards read: “Increase in fuel price hike is illegal” and “N13.76 plus N86. 50 is not equal to N145.”

Many security operatives were present at the venue of the protest to maintain law and order but efforts made by NAN to speak with the state police command’s spokesman, Femi Joseph, failed.

Police arrest principal for allegedly stealing N1.2m WAEC fees

Michael Diekola, a 42-year old school principal, has been docked at an Ikeja Chief Magistrate’s Court for allegedly collecting N1.2 million from his students under the pretext of enrolling them for the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Diekola, who lives at 8, Alirat Badejo Street, Oke Odo, Abule Egba, according to the police allegedly committed the offence sometimes in July 2014 at a private school, Queen Diana College. The prosecutor, Inspector Clifford Ogu, told the court that “the accused bolted with the money and all efforts to locate him were unsuccessful until he was sighted by one of the teachers and was immediately apprehended,” the police alleged.

Diekola however denied the charges.

In her ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs Taiwo Akanni, granted the school principal bail of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum and ordered the accused to pay N250, 000 into the court’s Chief Registrar’s account as part of the bail conditions.

The case was adjourned till June 6 for mention.

Cash crunch: NYSC may not mobilise thousands for service •DG cries out for help, says 2016 budget shortchanged corps of N13bn

DIRECTOR-GENERAL of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier-General Sulyman Kazaure, on Monday, said thousands of prospective corps members meant to commence service on Friday will miss the exercise, due to non-availability of funds.

Kazaure, while appearing before the Senate Committee on Youth and Sports, said the corps members earlier slated for mobilisation this week would remain in their homes due to paucity of funds.

He said the service had a shortfall of N13 billion in the 2016 budget, adding that the development had made it cash-strapped.

According to him, the prospective corps members, meant to be of ‘Batch A’ stream two, who were expected to hit the 37 orientation camps on Friday, could no longer be accommodated because of lack of funds.

He said as of Monday, the funds required could not be accessed from the Federal Government, adding that the corps had made spirited efforts through series of letters written in the past weeks.

He also said series of requests for release of funds for the impending mobilisation were forwarded to Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Budget and National Planning and the Presidency before the expiration of orientation camp for Batch A stream one, who were already out of camp.

“We are presently at a loss in NYSC now, as there is no money for us to mobilise thousands of prospective corps members  in the Batch A stream 2 to camp this Friday as earlier planned, despite efforts made by us to get things done in that direction several weeks ago.

“The problem staring us in the face arose from the N13 billion shortfall we had in the 2016 budget estimates,  upon which the agency made strong request for its provision during budget defence about three months ago,” he said.

The Director-General, however, expressed the hope that a last minute intervention could be made to ensure the release of the needed funds, as, according to him, the Chief of Staff to the President had invited the Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, to see him over the matter.

Chairman of the committee, Senator Obinna Ogba, equally expressed concern over the development.

He assured the NYSC boss that the Senate would intervene by setting up emergency meetings with the minister, the NYSC, as well as the ministries of Finance and Budget.
