When Sir Victor Uwaifo ‘Stole’ Silverbird Man Of The Year Award

Words hardly suffice when the subject of discussion is the revered Prof. (Sir) Victor Uwaifo. What usually reverberates in the mind of millions of his fans all over the world is ‘music’. But there is more to this ageless septuagenarian who still practice 100 press-up body building exercise every morning, other than music.

Sir, Victor Uwaifo, a quintessential Professor of Sculpture, Maestro, Inventor, Engineer, Architect, Instrumentalist, Author, just to mention but a few, share the same trajectory with Italian Leonardo Da-Vinci, unarguably regarded as the most gifted human ever recorded in history in the Renaissance period.

Recently, the multi-gifted award winner (Uwaifo), added another feather to his ever growing fame at the 2015 Man of the Year Award organized by Silverbird Communications. The event held on a brilliant Sunday night at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos was a gathering of the crème de la crème across socio-cultural and political landscape in Nigeria. It was an atmosphere of conviviality, colourful, and had the trappings of a celebration of culture, especially within the arrays of traditional attires, including music and dance performances.

After reading his citation by the organizers in a wide televised electronic big screen hung conspicuously at the podium for all eyes to see, he mounted the podium accompanied by his children and friends to receive the prestigious award. The atmosphere reverberated with his popular and evergreen songs:

“Guitar boy’’ and ‘‘Jeromi” Commenting on his award with his golden voice which sounds like the charm of mystic magnetism, Uwaifo said:        “I feel great to have been singled out for this award, out of over 170 million Nigerians. I think, it is the crowning glory of my career. Even the Nigerian National award I received 33 years ago alongside Late Sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, where about 1000 people were recognised,is not as significant as this. This time just 17 out of 170 million Nigerians and i made the list. This is the greatest thing that has ever happened in entertainment, and the greatest achievement spanning over fifty years”.

Prof Victor Uwaifo indeed was the cynosure of all eyes at the event as everyone wanted to see him, from the beginning of the event to the end.

The event was indeed a great outing where about 20 distinguished Nigerians clinched the coveted award individually at different spheres in recognition of their contributions to the development of the nation and indeed service to humanity. The musical legend, Sir Victor Uwaifo, Aka Guitar Boy; Juju Maestro, King Sunny Ade aka KSA; and movie maker, Eddie Ugboma were the 3 entertainment personalities.

It was indeed a night of glamour and inspiration, as many awards were echoed loud and clear and the citation of each awardee was being read, but non reverberated in the atmosphere like that of Professor (Sir) Victor Uwaifo. Right from the entrance of the building where he alighted from his beautiful vehicle with this two children, you will easily notice how different personalities want to have his glimpse, or take some snapshots with the maestro who was the pioneer Commissioner of Arts,  culture &  Tourism  and Professor at the University of Benin, Benin City. At the gate of the event hall, where Silverbird Man of the Year 2015, was conspicuously written in a giant city size poster, one could easily see how personalities of all kinds were competing to have photographs with the legend for legacy. There were warm embrace between him and Chief Bola Tinubu, King Sunny Ade, Ben Bruce family, Chief Peter Obi, Chief Tony Okoroji etc. While that between him and the musical icon Tu Face at the event, was a synergy between the youth and the elderly.
